K.C. Groves - Something Familiar #396

There's "Something Familiar" about the new CD by Colorado Bluegrass singer-songwriter KC Groves. From beginning to end, these are Everywoman's songs about those major turning points in life, particularly love and romance.Groves wrote most of the songs for this, her second solo album, while living in a farmhouse with no heat during a tough Michigan winter. She had just turned 30 and begun that inevitable examination of life's changing course. The first song, "Snapshots of a Life," sets the tone for an entire record full of catchy tunes that contrast with the very personal and sometimes wistful nature of the lyrics."I wrote it for my birthday," says Groves. "I was feeling kind of melancholy and contemplative about getting older and passing all these things by. It's like zipping by in a car passing all these little snippets of heartwarming and poignant scenes from my life."The album was recorded in Colorado with guitarist Jim Hurst as co-producer. Featuring a stellar line up of Denver-area musicians, "Something Familiar" boasts guest appearances by members of Open Road, Leftover Salmon and Hot Rize.  "I wanted to include the people I've been playing gigs with since I moved here. I wanted my friends like Eric [Thorin] and Armando [Zuppa] and Ross [Martin] who are super talented," says Groves. In addition to the outstanding music, Groves hopes that the universal themes will resonate for her listeners, especially young women who are experiencing the trouble and pain of love for the first time. "There's enough old men's bluegrass about killing and drinking; this is young women's bluegrass," she says. "I'm finally in a place where I can learn from my mistakes and share the lessons. It's so hard to see other people in that same spot. I'd love for young girls to relate to this album." KC Groves lives in Lyons, Colorado-less than a mile from Planet Bluegrass. In 1999 she won the Detroit Music Award for best bluegrass artist or group for her first album "Can You Hear It." She was a finalist in the Troubadour Contest at the 2000 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. She is a founding member of the Dangerfields and of Uncle Earl, an all-female old time band.
